Windy Mill Orchard

My dad and I took Katie to the Windy Mill Orchard in York, SC last Saturday for their 17th annual Apple Festival. The directions said to look for a windmill to know you're in the right place. I never saw the windmill, but I'm thinking maybe they meant PISTOL!

Our first stop when we got there was to a cider stand. We bought Katie some fresh pressed cider but she was pretty confused on how to drink out of an apple!

She squeezed a fair amount of it on herself and never really figured out how to keep the green cap from out of her face, but she loved the cider! We refilled it twice while we were there!

Next stop was the outdoor amphitheater where the seats were made of bales of hay and plywood boards. We waited patiently for Johnny Appleseed to come press some more cider.

Johnny Appleseed wore a skunk-skinned hat and overalls and taught us all about the health benefits apples, one of which is that eating an apple is better than brushing your teeth! Here's Katie clapping because she thinks she never has to brush again!

Next stop was bagging apples. The orchard had already been picked and there were bushels and bushels of apples to pick through. We picked a 1/4 peck each and even through a few to some pigs!

Last stop before we left was to feed some goats. We were given "goat feed" in an ice cream cone to pass through the fence. However, the fence was surrounded by the line for the hayride so I can imagine these goats had been fed pretty well for the previous few hours so none of them came close enough. But we just threw our food inside the fence and hoped they would have it for a late afternoon snack.

Our walk back to the car took us right through the orchard and my dad was convinced there were still some apples that were ripe for the picking. He and Katie sludged through the field to pick a few.

Then Katie wanted to pick every single one that she saw still hanging on a branch so the walk back to the car took a solid 30 minutes as she picked apples and threw them on the ground.

OK, seriously - how much FALL can one family take??? We are loving it and gearing up for nephews birthday season, Halloween, and a Chili Cookoff for which I still need a recipe!

Picking apples sounds like so much fun! But what's the deal with the pistol? I don't get it! :-)
