Dieting in the New Year

So who hasn't made the new year's resolution to try and lose some weight this year? I simply made a resolution to do a sit up every time I see a commercial for a weight loss program - I should have a six pack by February!

I am not much for dieting because there are certain things I just won't go without - bread, coke, chips. But I certainly do need to watch my portions. Anyone who has ever been to Cici's Pizza with me knows that I can put some food down!

Because depriving myself of the foods I enjoy only leave me to gorge myself later and then end up gaining weight, I just don't do the diet thing. But, here are a few weight loss tips that I think I can get on board with and maybe they will help you too.

First - try and drink a glass of water before each meal. It will help you feel fuller and possibly eat less at the meal.

Second - use a smaller plate! The average dinner plate in the 50s was 9 inches which is the size of today's salad plate. Our dinner plates typically measure 12 inches! So, when you're fixing your dinner plate - use the smaller salad plate and try not to go back for seconds.

Third - brush your teeth right after dinner. This should help those after dinner snackers like me!

Ok - so there's my two cents worth about dieting. Don't deprive yourself of the things you like. Be smart - eat smaller portions and try to be sensible about snacking!

My focus this year is my hips! I firmly believe my hips are the reason I am still in maternity pants. My stomach may still be big too, but I would not know, since I can't get pants up over my hips! So, hopefully my birthing hips (which came in handy on November 14) will go away for a time. Wish me luck!

Katie and I are off for a girl's weekend with Lindsay (and baby Cole), Melissa, my mom, and Doug's mom. We are headed to the beach! It's going to be sooo cold and I was hoping to spend my time inside the outlets, but seeing as Doug's mom is the only one on an active payroll these days, my shopping may be more of the window variety!

We're excited about our first road trip but we will sure miss Doug! Hopefully he won't enjoy his new found bachelorhood too enjoyable!

I have always been a big proponent of the Toothpaste Diet. Seems like a great idead: if you bruch your teeth, all of your food will taste terrible and thus you won't eat. If only there was a way to market it and make money. Unfortunately, since it is so simple, you only need to buy toothpaste. Maybe we can develop a great tasting toothpaste that make food taste extra nasty. Let's go into development on this. I've got about 20 bucks that I can contibute for research.

Doug, I promise you that you will love the weekend alone and be just fine. You'll miss Katie like crazy and wish her to come home...but that day or two of down time is very nice.

Good advice on portion control; that's probably one of the hardest disciplines related to weight loss. When you're hungry, it can be very difficult to moderate!
